Spirals

Spirals

What guided the hand
the hand that carved spirals into stone?

Was it the winding galaxies
or leaf mold dreams
that brought the artist to this bliss?

Could it have been fiddle heads of ferns
splitting black volcanic rock or
butterfly tongues unrolling or
morning glory stems winding or
the chambered nautilus spinning pearl?

It may have been the skylark's upward gyre
the whorled inner ear or
invisible double helixes
the centers of sun flowers.

From the still center the hand traced
a moving force hidden from us now.
